The stories first appeared in the Strand magazine in 1891-92, and were first published collectively in 1892. This edition is edited and with a lengthy introduction by Richard Lancelyn Green, who has supplied 93 pages of explanatory notes in the appendix. This compact volume is an entry in the publisher's "The Oxford Sherlock Holmes" series, general editor: Owen Dudley Edwards. Three handsome volumes represent the entirety of the series of four novels and five collections of short stories featuring Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character. Each volume housed in its own slipcase. With black & white illustrations in all three volumes by Frederic Dorr Steele, Sidney Paget and others (some re-drawn for this edition). Definitive text, corrected and edited by Edgar W. Smith; with an introduction by Vincent Starrett and Vol. 3 epilogue by Mr. Smith. One Sandglass flyers present: Volume 1 (New York: #III & IV:22). --- Each volume with a relief image of Mr. Holmes in black cover oval. Paper-covered boards feature 'VR' pattern in bullet holes, after the cypher of Queen Victoria, (or Victoria Regina); a nod to Holmes's tendency to " . . . sit in an arm chair with his hair-trigger and a hundred Boxer cartridges and proceed to adorn the opposite wall with a patriotic V. R. done in bullet pocks." Spines in black cloth w/gilt-stamped titling; textblock edges speckled in red. Slipcases covered in black paper. --- The paper design on Vol. I does not quite match the other two volumes, and with slight sunning to spines. With prior owners' signatures to front free endpaper of two volumes; otherwise the books are clean, unmarked and sound. Slipcase of volume I outer covering was torn and has been repaired; the other two are in good shape though Vol. III's has a partial tear to corner.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1777 pages

Hyde, Charles Raymond Macauley, Sidney Paget, Frederic Dorr Steele, Arthur Twidle, Frank Wiles and numerous others. --- In teal paper-covered boards backed in light green cloth, with gilt-stamped spine titling. Jackets in olive green, with image of Holmes on covers. Both volumes housed in shared slipcase. --- With mild bumps to heads of spines, 4-inch tear to paper at gutter near title page on volume II, and minor discoloration to lower edge of volume I, otherwise a bright, clean, sound set. Jackets with creasing to edges, along with a small tear here and there, otherwise lacking other damages. Fair only slipcase with tears at corners, and bumps and small bruises to extremities but intact, relatively sound and able to protect the books.
