Twelve months of Our Young Folks Magazine, bound together in one volume. In dark brown quarter leather and paper-covered board covers with decorations and lettering in gilt on spine. Offers a wide variety of fictional stories, poems, games & riddles and non-fiction articles. Includes many attractive b&w photos, engraved illustrations (some in color) and drawings. --- Includes works by noted authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe ('The Hen That Hatched Ducks' and 'Little Pussy Willow' and several others) and Horatio Alger, Jr. ('How Johnny Bought a Sewing-Machine') and many other authors. Many of these works first appeared in this magazine. --- Front cover and first page have detached from the volume and rear cover has loosened; but interior pages are in good shape, though with some discoloration and an occasional tear. 'Our Young Folks' was acquired and merged into 'St. Nicholas Magazine' in 1874. Though damaged, this work affords the reader a glimpse into everyday life and pastimes for children at the time of Lincoln and the Civil War.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 770 pages

Former property of the library.In green cloth-covered boards with decorations and lettering in black on cover; in black and gilt on spine. With numerous b&w engraved illustrations, including tissue-protected frontis illust. Likely first edition, but not possible to verify for this publisher. Volume is cocked, and with interior smudges and some soiling and foxing. Library ownership evidence consists of rubberstampings at endpapers, and at least once in mid-volume; pocket removal damage to front free endpaper. A few pages with dampstains. Covers chafed and worn at edges. Textblock intact but somewhat loose. An autobiographical novel, set in author's childhood home of Litchfield, Connecticut, and set in the early 19th century. ; Ex-Library; Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall; 375, (8, ads) pages

A Modern Library reprint edition of the classic novel (first published in 1852) which played a major role in overturning slavery and fomenting the American Civil War. With an introduction by Raymond Weaver. --- In Toledano spine 8 / grey cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style h / verso advertises Howell's "Rise of Silas Lapham" but not Dinesen's "Out of Africa". Likely published c.1951 (though 1938 date appears in book). ML #261.1. --- With prior owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down, whitish discoloration and loss of gilding to spine, otherwise a firm, intact copy. Unclipped dust jacket with a good-sized tear to top front edge, other smaller tears & chafing to edges and darkened spine; else intact and protected in removable mylar wrapper.; 12mo 7" - 7-1/2" tall; xxiii, 552 pages
