First trade edition of Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1927 novel, which was preceded by a very limited "preliminary issue" and the London edition by a handful of days. The "Bridge of San Luis Rey" is concerned with a fictional Incan rope bridge in Peru that collapsed and one man's multi-year effort to trace the lives of the five victims who happened to be on it when it gave way. With 9 black & white illustrations on plates by Amy Drevenstedt (one, at frontispiece, is missing). --- In finely-woven tan cloth, with titling and designs in dark green on cover and spine; decorative map of Peru to endpapers and faded green topstain.
