A fifty-one volume, complete run of the Five-Foot Shelf of Books series, "The Harvard Classics". The series was edited by Charles William Eliot, who often supplied introductions and notes to the various volumes. Includes the original 50 numbered volumes in matching bindings, plus an additional 51st which is a little mis-matched, from a later 1914 series and entitled "Lectures". Dr. Eliot believed the Harvard Classics would supply a reader with a liberal education if only they would work their way down a "five-foot shelf of books" containing essential classical writings, from Frankin's Autobiography to Darwin's Origin of Species to notable English poetry. Volume 50 consists of Eliot's introduction to the series, reader's guide, indices of poetry & song first lines, general index and chronological index. --- In maroon cloth-covered boards with titling in gilt to spines. Harvard's seal and other decorations blindstampsed to covers and spines. Each volume with a frontis image of some kind, usually in the form the featured writer's portrait. Volumes lack dust jackets. --- The books are generally sound and tightly-bound but some with partial tears to gutters or soiling/chafing to cloth. Vol. 51 with chafing to spine ends, plus rubbing and lightened cloth.; Small Octavo (7-1/2 to 8 in. tall)
