A third edition, enlarged and improved, of Matthew Fontaine Maury's detailed 1855 study of the world's oceans. With 7 folded maps and a folded pilot sheet at rear of volume, one additional map and two more plates with drawings within the volume. Maury served in the U. S. Navy and when an injury ended his nautical career, he turned to the science of the seas. This work was influential for oceanic work and understanding and was used by mariners, cable-layers and others after its publication. --- Bound in full brown cloth-covered boards with fillets in blind to covers, titling in gilt to spine and with gilt-stamped image of sailing ships to cover. --- With tears and crumpling due to improper folding of the folded maps, general yellow toning and foxing to leaves, a few bruises to cover extremities, pencilings to first page. It appears that the front free endpaper has been torn out. Overall, a still-relatively sound copy of this notable contribution to nautical science.; Tall Octavo (9 to 10 in. tall); 287 pages
