When first published in France in 1857, these poems of Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) were very controversial due to themes of sensuality and challenges to moralistic standards of his day. This English language verstion edited, with translations from a variety of translators, by James Laver, who supplies an introduction and end notes. Illustrated with etchings by Pierre-Yves Trémois. --- In marbled paper-covered boards backed in maroon cloth, with gilt-stamped titling & decorations on black spine block; maroon topstain.
