The final novel by Mr. Dickens is a murder mystery, first published in installments in 1870. It was not complete at the time of his death, however his manuscripts contained readable erasures which tended to indicate that the author was unwilling to tip off the reader about the eventual outcome. In this reprint edition, those erasures have been added and indicated with underlinings. With color and b&w illustrations by Everett Shinn; edited and with a prefatory note & introduction by Vincent Starrett. Sandglass flyer laid in (New York, no. VI:17). --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards w/maroon decorations on covers & spine, gilt title oval on spine, and maroon topstain. Volume bears 1941 date, but possibly published c.1950s-70s. Volume protected in maroon paper-covered slipcase. --- With a little yellowing to spine, spots of soiling (coffee?) on spine, and prior owner's sticker affixed to front paste-down, otherwise a clean, bright, tightly-bound copy. Structurally intact slipcase with light rubbing.; Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); xxxi, 263 pages
