
Probable first editions (1906), though undated. English theologian Thomas Percy (1729-1811) compiled this selection of ballads & poems, some dating to pre-Chaucerian times. The ballads were very popular with British school children. In two Everyman's Library volumes, Entries 148 & 149 in Everyman's Library Poetry series, edited by Ernest Rhys (who has supplied a brief editorial note) and glossary at rear of vol. 2. --- In flatback binding style 1, full ribbed olive cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis.
