An undated, probable first Everyman's Library edition (1911), so indicated by lack of subsequent printings on the copyright page. Sixteen late 12th century romantic stories by Marie de France, about whom little is known. A "lay" is a medieval poem, ballad or story. Translated from the French, and with an introduction, by Eugene Mason. An entry in Everyman's Library "Romance" series, edited by Ernest Rhys. E.L. no. 557. --- In 'flatback' binding style 1, full ribbed blue cloth-covered boards with Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- A Fair-only copy, with dampstains to covers and textblock edges, a few penciled underlinings to text, torn cloth at edges &head of spine and general dulling to spine gilding, else tightly-bound and fully readable.
